Alberto Ginastera "A Man of Latin America" is the second video in the master class series written and produced by pianist Barbara Nissman. In this 2-DVD set, Nissman provides an in-depth study of one of the most prominent composers to emerge from Latin America in the twentieth century. Nissman worked with Ginastera and shares his journey, taking us from the pampas of Argentina to his final resting place in Switzerland with plenty of musical adventures in between. The first DVD presents a portrait of the composer and includes interviews with the composer himself; his daughter Georgina; his widow, cellist Aurora Natola; the conductor Leonard Slatkin discussing the Popol Vuh, Ginastera's final work; the late Keith Emerson of ELP talking about meeting the composer, and the late jazz pianist Chick Corea who was a big fan of his music. The second DVD presents master classes and performances by Nissman of his Three Piano Sonatas as well as his popular early work, the Tres Danzas Argentinas. Highly recommended. A valuable teaching tool not only for the serious music student but also for the general music lover. Nissman knew Ginastera, worked with him and feels the responsibility to share her knowledge and her passion for his music.
